  1. Universal Message System (UMS)  -- Release 10.9

  5. Installation:
  6. -------------
  7.  
  8. - UMS is distributed on two 880k floppy disks called "UMS-Release_10.9_1"
  9.   and "UMS-Release_10.9_2". If you don't use those disks please make sure
  10.   to use "MakeAssign" in order to assign "UMS-Release_10.9_1" and
  11.   "UMS-Release_10.9_2" to the appropriate directories.

  13. - There is an installer script to install a simple UMS setup. You _MUST_
  14.   use this script to install UMS. Otherwise you'll have a lot of
  15.   unnecessary trouble. Installer is part of this distribution.  Please,
  16.   _DO_ use "Installer" and "Install-UMS" to install your first UMS 
  17.   environment!
  18.  
  19. - There is no example configuration except the configuration created by
  20.   "Install-UMS" and little documentation. Currently a new comprehensive
  21.   documentation using AmigaGuide is being written. Please stay tuned.

  24. Messagereader:
  25. --------------

  27. - This package features IntuiNews 1.2b, a powerful graphical news and mail
  28.   reader written by Matthias Scheler and Markus Stipp. It's based on
  29.   Stefan Stuntz' Magic User Interface. MUI is not part of this
  30.   distribution.

  32. - The other reader is RUMS written by Martin Horneffer and updated by
  33.   Kai Bolay. This reader is console based and can be customized using a
  34.   special script language.
  35.  
  36. - Some other readers are currently under developement. Please contact the
  37.   authors of these readers directly to get public betas or release
  38.   versions. The installer script will show their email addresses.

  41. Bulletin Board Systems:

  44. - There are no BBSs included in this release. However several are under
  45.   development. Please contact the authors directly. They are named in the
  46.   installer script.

  49. Networks:

  52. - There are drivers for UUCP and Fido as well as drivers for the German
  53.   networks Maus and Z-Netz.
  54.  
  55. - UUCiCo for polling UUCP systems is included in this distribution.

  57. - You need a separate mailer for using Fido. TrapDoor is a good choice but
  58.   not included in this distribution.
  59.  
  60. - An ARexx script for "MausTausch" using VLT ist provided.

  62. - ZerberusMailer is included for doing a Z-Netz "netcall".

  65. Tools:

  68. - a lot of tools are provided which make the use of UMS easier. Please take
  69.   a look at their manuals. The most important tool to start with is
  70.   'Expire'.

  76. - documentation and include files for C, Modula-2 and Oberon(-2) and
  77.   ARexx are provided.

  80. Usage:
  81. ------

  83. - First you'll have to run the install script to copy all parts of UMS to
  84.   your harddisk. Please _DO_ use the script for this purpose! Please do
  85.   _NOT_ try to copy all this stuff by hand. The installer isn't simply
  86.   unpacking the stuff. It actually moves it around and *GENERATES* files.
  87.  
  88. - Then you should have a look on all files (scripts/docs) which were
  89.   installed in order to get a general overview.
  90.  
  91. - Then you can use the newsreader of your choice for reading and writing
  92.   messages. Use your own login for that purpose.
  93.  
  94. - If you want to exchange messages with an other system you'll have to
  95.   run the appropriate exporter for this system (use the login for the
  96.   system's UMS user). Then you call the system in order to send the
  97.   exported messages and receive new messages. The new messages must be
  98.   imported using the appropriate importer.
  99.  
  100. - You should clean up your messagebase regularely. First you have to run
  101.   the tool expire which marks old messages as expired. After that you
  102.   should  make a backup of your message base, because if the cleanup
  103.   process is interupted a corrupt message base is very likely. After the
  104.   backup you should run "cleanums.rexx" with physically deletes all deleted
  105.   and expired messages. CleanUMS may not be interuppted. After that you'll
  106.   have more space on your harddisk.

  112. - Release 10.1: first launch at the programmer's meeting in Illertissen
  113.   (25.4.1993)

  115. - Release 10.2: added MUMS 0.13e as reader (one is better than none)
  116.   (7.5.1993)    fixed bugs with FidoImport and the installer script

  118. - Release 10.3: umsserver and ums.library in 10.2 had some bugs that could
  119.   (10.5.1993)   simply be fixed.

  121. - Release 10.4: small bugfixes

  124. - Release 10.5: some other bugfixes. This release was pretty stable.

  127. - Release 10.6: changed installation concept, included Installer and
  128.   (23.9.1993)   AmigaGuide to the distribution. Updates to nearly all
  129.                 software. Highlights are IntuiNews, an ARexx interface
  130.                 for ums.library and ums.service for using UMS in a local
  131.                 area network.

  133. - Release 10.7: Removed minor bugs and final cleanup.

  137.   (19.11.1993)  distribution on floppy disks. Updated some software.
